Did you know that up to 40% of cargo hold space on international cargo aircraft is occupied by empty void filler and bubble wrap? In response, global freight carriers use dimensional (volumetric) pricing to ensure shippers pay for the physical volume their cargo consumes.

The Universal Formula

Standard IATA Dimensional Weight Formula

Volumetric Weight (kg) = (L × W × H in cm) ÷ 5,000

Carriers bill on the larger of Actual Gross Weight vs. Volumetric Weight.

Real-World Case Study: Apparel Exporter

Consider an exporter sending winter coats weighing 4 kg.

  • Box A (Standard Store Box): 50 cm × 40 cm × 30 cm = 60,000 cm³ ÷ 5,000 = 12.0 kg Billable Weight. The shipper pays for 12 kg!
  • Box B (Vacuum-compressed & Right-sized): 40 cm × 30 cm × 18 cm = 21,600 cm³ ÷ 5,000 = 4.32 kg Billable Weight.

By simply removing excess air and vacuum-sealing soft goods, the billable weight drops from 12 kg to 4.3 kg — slashing shipping expenditure by over 60% on that single package!

Four Rules for Packaging Efficiency

  1. Standardize on 3 to 4 nested carton sizes rather than one large multi-purpose box.
  2. Compress bulky textiles, apparel, and foam products using poly-mailers or vacuum packing.
  3. Measure outer dimensions from extreme points, including protruding handles and bulges.
  4. Avoid round tubes when possible; square or triangular triangular mailers pack without dimensional penalization.
